Cutting Designs into Concrete / Cement Floors - Acid Stained Floors

acid stained floors

Want to add sophistication and beauty to your floors with just one extra step. Try cutting designs into your cement floors before acid staining them. There are an endless number of designs and looks that you can create with just a simple hand circular saw and a carbide blade. For an even nicer look use two different color stains to create borders and to accent the inside of a design.

First, lay out your design on paper. Then pop lines in the concrete or use a pencil to mark out where the lines will go. Put on goggles. Take your circular saw and carefully cut along the lines. You do not have to go in very deep. Just a sixteenth or an eighth of an inch is ok. A saw with a built in vacuum is nice to have. Otherwise, wear a face mask and do not breath the concrete powder.

After your lines are down you can tape off one side and apply your stain to the other. For a border you would tape off the wall and the outside of the border and spray in your acid. I use a small spray bottle and just work my way around the room. Wear goggles and gloves when handling the acid and keep it away from kids. For intricate designs you can brush in your acid with a small paint brush or artists brush. There is no limit to the number of designs you can create. Just remember that just like a tattoo, designs are easier to create than to erase.
