A good quality roll slitter is an integral part of many manufacturing processes. Roll Slitters are used to convert large wide rolls to narrow rolls. You would use a roll slitter to turn a 24 inch wide roll into 12 - 2 inch wide rolls. They are also referred to as baloney/bologna slitters, log slitters, lathe slitters, single knife slitters, crush slitters, or baloney/bologna slicers. They are often used in conjunction with machines called rewinders. Rewinders convert large rolls to shorter rolls. In other words, a rewinder would turn a 300 foot roll into a 150 foot roll. Roll slitters work like this. The slitter consists of a motor driven shaft that holds the roll of material. This shaft is mounted horizontally and is designed to spin the roll at a predetermined rpm. The operator will prepare a roll by making sure it is nice and tight and then slide the roll onto the drive shaft and lock it in place. The second component of the slitter is the blade. The blade also rotates. It is similar to a pizza slicer blade. Some blades free spin and some are powered depending on what is being cut. The round, sharp, blade is mounted so that either the operator or a computer can pull the blade into the material thus making a clean cut all the way to the core of the roll. Some machines are set up to where the roll slides and some are set up to where the blade slides. Both methods allow the blade to make contact with the roll in different spots so the operator can create the desired width roll. The machines are actually quite simple in how they work. Roll slitters are extremely rugged machines that can last decades if properly cared for. Also, if parts are available, old slitters can be refurbished to be just like new ones.
