Once your mantel, hearth and surround have been installed, your basic fireplace surround is done. We had originally intended to stop at this stage but since the most difficult part was finished we decided to continue up the wall which is our next article.
Our wall has an inset which made tiling it a little more challenging. Durarock was installed first. Then the tile was cut piece by piece and mortared to the durarock base. The biggest challenge was working from a ladder with the heavy tile. Having someone to hold the ladder and pass tile up and down is a must. When working off the ground safety is very important.
I have provided pictures above and below on this page to outline the chronological progression. As you can see, the center tile and the outside tile were installed first. Then the small tile that go around the arch were installed.
